US embassy celebrates 110th anniversary of George Balanchine’s birth

On Wednesday, January 22, Ambassador Norland congratulated Georgia on the occasion of the 110thanniversary of George Balanchine’s birth. George Balanchine, whose family roots were in Georgia, settled in the United States, and became one of the most famous choreographers of the 20th century. The Ambassador highlighted the U.S. Embassy’s plans for the yearlong celebration, which started with the publishing of a Balanchine-themed calendar for the New Year. The Embassy is also a proud sponsor of the ongoing translation and publication in Georgian of a fascinating new book by Elizabeth Kendall that was recently featured in the New York Review.

The festivities will continue with the arrival of Bart Cook, one of Balanchine’s most prominent dancers. The U.S. Embassy is thrilled to be sponsoring Mr. Cook’s upcoming visit to Georgia, when he will work with Nino Ananiashvili’s State Ballet to stage Concerto Barocco, one of Balanchine’s most significant pieces. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about the May premiere and other events surrounding the celebration.
